Volume profile basics for intraday traders

A volume profile shows how much trading occurred at each price level during a defined period — typically a session or a custom range. For intraday traders, the session profile answers a simple question: where did most participation happen today, and is price accepting or rejecting that region now?
Building a session profile
Most charting packages let you anchor a profile to the session open. Set the anchor to your primary session — Asia, London, or New York depending on what you trade — and let the profile build as candles form. The horizontal bars extend outward from each price level, with longer bars indicating more volume traded there.
Point of control and value area
The point of control (POC) is the price level with the highest volume in the profile. It often acts as a magnet during low-volatility stretches — price drifts toward it when no strong directional move is underway. The value area typically spans 70% of session volume around the POC, bounded by a value area high (VAH) and value area low (VAL).
When price is above the VAH, the session is accepting higher prices. When it drops back inside the value area, question whether the extension was initiative or simply a liquidity sweep above structure.
Using the profile with liquidity marks
Volume profile and liquidity mapping answer different questions. The profile shows where trading happened; liquidity marks show where resting orders may still sit. Combine them: if buy-side liquidity sits above the VAH and price sweeps it on declining profile volume, the sweep may lack follow-through. If the sweep occurs on expanding volume with delta confirming, continuation is more plausible.
Reset at each session
Intraday profiles are session-specific. Carrying yesterday's POC into today's trade without re-anchoring leads to stale levels. At the start of each session you trade, build a fresh profile and note the new POC, VAH, and VAL before marking liquidity zones on top.
